I actually watched the shows of the first 3 winners, and one was a Jennifer.

I don't know if this is the first time they showed a list of "performers" who died.

A few years ago they started using "actor" as a genderless term, and maybe they decided

that "performer" fits better.  However, musicians and singers are also performers, 

so it doesn't seem to fit well.
